Bergamot Essential Oils and your Emotions

The Relation between Essential Oils and Emotions

There is a scientific explanation for the connection between our emotions and what we smell. This connection has to do with our olfactory system, or sense of smell and the amygdala which is a part of the brain that acts as our emotional processing center.  These direct connection triggers memories and emotions or cause us to feel a certain way.

Memory Jogger Game

As you breath in the nearby odors, these smells are immediately registered by the brain.  The brain sends signal to the nerves, the cells, the muscles, and your emotions.  Let us play memory jogger game. Try to remember the last time you were by an open sewer or ran across a skunk that left its scent, or even a dead caucus. What were your reactions, once you realized the smell was not pleasing at all?
  1. You probably tensed up your face or body
  2. You held your breath
  3. You felt your blood getting warmer and your body more tensed, a faster heartbeat
  4. The longer the smell lingered the more you became agitated
  5. You longed for the ability to breath freely again
  6. The gradual progression of the above steps caused an emotion to form, one probably on the negative side, like stress.  Feelings of wanting to flee
Let us look at another scenario. Remember your favorite dish, or the scent of someone you love, or being in a room with a pleasant aroma.  Again, what were your reactions to the sense of smell that was pleasing to the brain?
  1. It probably caused you to smile
  2. A sense of longing, a pleasant desire
  3. It might a caused a steady breathing pattern
  4. The more breaths you took in the more relaxed you felt
  5. Emotions are formed, joy, happiness, warmth, gladness. Positive feeling is released
  6. This pleasing aroma causes the brain to either create a new memory or resurface an old memory that stimulated the body to have a sense of peace and security.

Too Much Stress is not Good

Many will agree that small levels of stress can be beneficial.  This level of stress can cause one to make decisions, to move toward a more desirable outcome and to be challenged in a positive way.   However, too much stress can cause life to become unbalanced, sickness and depression.   Stress is an indicator of something not right.  If stress is ignored, it can cause damage to you emotional, physically, and mentally.

Combat Stress

Stress has plagued this century, undoubtably, stress has been around since the fall in the Garden of Eden.  Adam & Eve most likely suffered through stress.  Which era had greater levels of stress can be debatable, this generation or generation of ancient days?  Ancient days did not have todays medicines, therapists, counselors., etc.  They had to utilize “primitive” ways to combat stress.  I say “primitive” because modern science likes to associate natural as “primitive”.  However as primitive as we may call them, I believed they had a longer life span that we do with all our advancement.

Let me stay on track.  In Ancient days, people learned to live off the land what was readily available in nature.  GOD gave them and us, flowers, tree barks and leaves, seeds, shrubbery, for medicinal and other uses.   Even in this century we still use flowers, tree barks natural things known as Essential Oils and Herbs.  Essential Oils varying grades.  The Essential Oils can be found in medicine, from cosmetic to household products.

Natural Remedy

Essential Oils date back to biblical era as the major forms of medicine, healing, and beauty regiments. Today they are considered as alternative medicine, aiding medicine, additives to our everyday products.  These Essential Oils are still beneficial to us.    Our focus will be on the Bergamot Essential Oil and how its aides in Reducing Stress.   Before we discuss Bergamot, I must make a note to the readers, please be aware essential oils manufacturers vary in the degree of purity of oils produced and I am not doctor and I am not giving any medical advice. Also please note not all essential oils can be used internally or even topically please check with manufacturer instruction.

Bergamot

If you are looking for a natural and aromatic experience to help you wind down after a stressful day. Bergamot should be one of your go-to Essential Oils. Bergamot is a citrus, spice, with a light floral note. It is known for its calming and uplifting abilities, helpful for those with anxiety. It also provides skin cleansing and purifying benefits.   Italians were known to use Bergamot oils for years to reduce feelings of stress and to soothe and rejuvenate skin, while the Greek used it as sweetmeats, eaten by the spoonful as a dessert or with coffee.

Using Bergamot

Diffuser use is one of the safest and most cost-efficient ways to relax and increase positive feelings is through inhalation of essential oils. Diffuser can be used in the various rooms in your living space, as well as workplace, classrooms, you can even find diffusers that can be used in automobiles, help with road rage.

Before I continue with the other methods of use of Bergamot, I must let you know I will be speaking on a certain company as I am a doTerra Certified Essential Oil Specialist Wellness Advocate.  The company is doTerra Essential Oils and is one of the top leading company in the industry.  At the time of writing this article doTerra Bergamot Essential Oils suggested uses
  1. Diffusing
  2. Internal use with a method of dilution of liquids
  3. Tropical which is applying to the skin along with a carrier oil.
I will put a link to my doTerra website so you can get more information on doTerra Brand of Bergamot.
GOD has given us many natural ways to combat stress in our lives.  Our Heavenly Father’s desire is that we live a full life, however stress tends to decrease that very quality of life. The affects of stress may show up in weight gain, joint discomfort, headache, ailment.
Low impact exercises a great way to reduce stress.  Low impact exercise is best as it helps reduce the cortisol level to balanced level and does not excite the heart.  Try diffusing some Bergamot in a diffuser while exercising and allow your mind to be settled.  Do not tolerate unnecessary stress in your life.
Bergamot has many health benefits assisting in healthy digestive system, emotional balance, and skin and can be blended with other doTerra Essential Oil.  Bergamot is photosensitive, and there are some safety cautions to using this oil in the summertime.
